My Ultimate Guide to Marrakech
I thought to give a break for the Top Ten Beaches series and concentrate on the beautiful and unique city of Marrakech for a while now, as it's my best intention to provide you with a travel guide as comprehensive as it gets
This is going to be a guide which is longer than
usual therefore it may happen that I will eventually release this in 2 or 3
segments.
First of all I wanted to compose a travel guide
which is a little bit different from the Top 10 things to do and Top Ten Things
to see in Marrakech. The reason for this is, that there are many guides like
that on the internet and many of them are not really useful while others mostly
enlist the very same things.
Important information:
First of all, Marrakech will be a very different
experience for you, depending on your sex and age. There are areas which are
not wise to visit if you are a woman travelling alone ( to the point I do not
advise women to travel in Marrakech or anywhere in Morocco alone at all) and there
are areas which are not wise to visit for men or couples alone either.
That’s exactly why if you do not have a local
friend to show you around especially if you want to visit the real authentic
and traditional areas, you will need to hire a guide who is with you almost
24/7 ( except for the time you are
within the gates of a Marrakech Riad or hotel of Morocco.
Of course there are areas and times when you can
visit alone though especially if you are a male or you are in a couple. But all
in all, without a guide you won’t be able to learn all that much of the experience and you risk
continuous harrassment in certain parts of the city ( see above). It is essential for you however to hire a trusted guide and the easiest to do is, if you hire him through the hotel or Riad you are at. You can also check the travel forums to see which guides and tourist offices the most people suggest or don't suggest. TripAdvisor is the best for this.
I will however do my best to enlist most of the areas
one can go, visit or walk alone. I will also do my best to include a couple of
places which are not on most others’ list.
It takes me a great deal of will-power not to mix
up the „Things to do” with the „Things to see”, but I do my best because I’d
like to comprise a separate„ Things to do”
in Marrakech, it will be worth it.
The sequels will also include tours, resorts ( in
my Riad blog) and other
relaxing places outside Marrakech which are worth visiting.
